Kingsley Residential Home

A modest home inspired by the local vernacular creating a fresh contemporary offering, nestled between a heritage building and an original Queenslander. Innovatively planned to accommodate a family through all stages of life with the flexibility for dual occupancy while the secluded interior takes advantage of coastal views and breezes.

The design team’s intention was to create a modest new home that would provide a new fresh contemporary offering using the local vernacular to fit in comfortably in the older traditional suburb of Manly. The design excels in optimising natural light through strategically placed windows while maintaining privacy and breathes with exceptional cross ventilation taking advantage of coastal breezes making it naturally comfortable to occupy. The home is designed and built according to sustainable design principles which saves energy, water and money while using durable materials, improved insulation and native landscaping.

The design team’s main principle was to create an adaptable home that will accommodate a family through all generational stages of life, ‘the family odyssey’. The intention was to facilitate a comfortable couples retreat within a dual living arrangement with the flexibility to convert into short stay accommodation while remaining available to visiting family and friends. The success of the shared living is not only achieved by careful planning ensuring independence and privacy but also through increased insulation, independent access, provision of amenities and reticulation of services. The house still presents as a single dwelling with a full complement of living spaces and bedrooms expected of a family home.
